The Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science (TECS) at NC State University is seeking talented and motivated candidates for a tenure track faculty position in technical textiles/textile technology (TT) at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Applicants must have a doctoral degree from an accredited university in Fiber, Polymer and Science, Textile Technology, Textile Engineering, Textile Science, or a related field. Strong preference will be given to those who possess an undergraduate degree in textile technology or textile engineering, or a closely related field. The successful candidate must have expertise in the areas of textile manufacturing processes, such as yarn and fabric formation, and other relevant technologies. The candidate is expected to have a strong interest in applying their expertise to the current and emerging areas of research related to fibers/fiber-based products, as well as synergistic interdisciplinary collaborations across multiple disciplines and institutions in close partnership with industry and government. A typical faculty load in TECS is 45% research, 45% teaching, and 10% service.
Teaching: We seek educators who demonstrate strong potential for teaching excellence in the TT program. The successful candidate will be expected to excel in the teaching of fiber/textiles manufacturing science and technology and to mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We prefer an individual who is dynamic in the classroom and is student-centric. Active participation in academic advising of students as well as in the assessment/accreditation process is also expected. The primary teaching responsibilities will be in textile technology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; however, skills in polymer and fiber sciences are also desirable. The successful candidate is required to teach one or more courses in the TT program including those with TT, TMS, and MT prefixes as well as TT related courses within the Textile Technology Management (TTM) and Fiber Polymer Science (FPS) degrees. In addition, new course topics can also be proposed. Detailed course descriptions can found at https://www.acs.ncsu.edu/php/coursecat/directory.php
Research: We seek scholars who exhibit potential for establishing and growing an active research program in the emerging areas of fibers and textiles, which entails effective mentoring of both graduate and undergraduate students and managing a productive and safe laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to secure extramural funding and to communicate research findings in peer-reviewed and other scholarly publication as well as in technical meetings at the local, national, and international levels. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to build an active interdisciplinary research program in collaboration with faculty outside the college and the university. Particular research areas of interest include advanced yarn and textile manufacturing, performance modeling of textile products/systems, polymer/fiber-based smart materials and structures, although related and/or complementary areas will also be considered. Candidates who value a collaborative environment are preferred.
Service: We seek an individual who will be proactive and enthusiastic about actively recruiting and retaining TECS undergraduate and graduate students, with a commitment to improving access to higher education for students from underrepresented groups. In addition, TECS expects active service on departmental, college, and university committees and involvement in professional societies and organizations.
Inclusiveness and diversity are academic imperatives and thus are university goals. We particularly seek candidates who have an interest in working with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and are committed to improving access to higher education for students and faculty from underrepresented groups. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to provide services to the textile industry in close collaboration with the College of Textiles extension program.
