Parsons School for Design, a division of The New School, seeks a Full-time Technician to support first year curriculum. S/he should be a proactive, detail oriented individual who will become integral to the daily workings of the sewing, textiles, soft construction and media resources facilities, with the ability to learn new skills and technologies as needed.
This is a fast paced dynamic environment that runs year round. The Technician will interface with students and faculty daily and work with Making Center staff to support multiple processes and resources for all users in a range of making spaces including the sewing, textiles and media resources facilities. This is an administrative position, governed by a Local 1205 Teamsters collective bargaining agreement, that reports to the Associate Director of Sewing, Textiles, and Soft Construction in the Making Center.
Responsibilities: - Provide and maintain a safe working environment for students, faculty and staff. - Supervise and enforce policies for use of the making facilities by students, faculty, and staff. - Work with other FT Technicians on the maintenance, installation and continuous operation of all software, hardware and photographic equipment both analog and digital. - Assist Facilities Manager and Associate Director Sewing, Textiles and Soft Construction by: supporting faculty and students, leading demo sessions and/or workshops about various pieces of equipment, making hardware/software purchase recommendations; attending field related conferences and shows, promotional material and web page; conducting tours for visitors, orientation, various departmental projects, etc. - Organize software & hardware updates as needed. - Manage equipment checkout for both faculty and student for in-lab and on campus, use as well as off-site special requests. - Organize equipment use, demonstrations, and orientations for students and faculty, including scheduling, maintaining public calendars, and tracking attendance. - Support learning objectives during facility open working hours. - Oversee updating of lab websites. - Train and oversee student technical lab staff. - Create clear, accurate, user-friendly documentation and instructions for all equipment/processes. - Provide technology support for Parsons-wide technology initiatives and events as they arise. - Assist with inventory oversight and ordering of materials and supplies. - Maintain an accurate inventory and scheduling system (Web Checkout) for lab reservations and equipment rental. - Attend weekly FT Technician meetings, monthly general staff meetings - Oversee daily workings of the of the traditional B&W Darkrooms, five shooting studios, one digital input lab and one digital output lab (including printer and scanner maintenance) - Supply application support for Adobe CS 6 (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Dreamweaver, Premier), Capture One, Flexcolor Scan Software, Imovie, Leaf Conversion software. - Troubleshooting both digital and traditional photo lab equipment - Troubleshooting both digital and mechanical sewing machines.
- Masters degree or Bachelor’s degree with significant experience in a related field. - Flexible schedule with ability to work nights and weekends. - Knowledge of both wet and digital processes as well as, various strobe and light equipment - Full comprehensive experience with all film and digital camera formats - Technical knowledge of MAC and PC computers in addition to Adobe CS6, Capture One, Flexcolor Scan Software, Leaf Conversion software - Working knowledge of network systems, wireless systems, printer server software, color calibration. - Experience in soft construction including domestic machines, Juki straight stitch, and specialty machines such as walking foot, zig-zag, serger, coverstitch. - Proven track record of working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional training, and aesthetic sensibilities in a creative environment. - Ability to develop and nurture individual student's abilities and a strong commitment to progressive art and design education. - An interest in working collaboratively within Parsons, the University, and with external partners towards the development of shared projects and initiatives. - Candidate must have excellent oral and written skills, communication skills, and must be able to work both independently and collectively. - Highly organized with excellent customer service skills as well as clear written and verbal communication. - A desire to learn new skills and processes related to Parsons Making Center initiatives. - Knowledge of the Durst Theta 76 Digital C Printer a plus
