POSITION SUMMARY: The Division of Student Life; Iowa Memorial Union; Iowa Hawk Shop is seeking an Apparel Buyer to manage all acquisition, inventory management, and merchandising functions for apparel and assigned logoed merchandise. Develop assigned departmental sales and inventory plan, and analyze, and report variances. Assist in developing departmental strategic plans as well as the development and implementation of short- and medium-range objectives.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND SPECIFIC JOB TASKS:
Procure and Deliver Goods and Services: Coordinate the day-to-day operation of a retail or non-retail operation and/or may assist college/divisions, departments and units in evaluation, negotiation and procurement of goods and services. Responsibilities may include sales, controllable expenses, cash management, and merchandising, identification of supply options, inventory control, loss prevention and store appearance. Make recommendations on what and where to buy product and/or service.
Research Products, Prepare Product/Equipment Specifications & Contract Management: Perform product research and utilization analysis. Prepare product or equipment specifications. Make recommendations and procure product or service, and prepare product or equipment specifications. Assist with the implementation of policies. Monitor contracts. Support product negotiations, contract pricing, and terms and conditions within established guidelines on behalf of unit, dept. and/or organization.
Inventory Management & Marketing: Oversee inventory controls; determine reorder amounts. Manage merchandise assortment and new production information. Analyze sales trends and make recommendations to optimize sales utilizing merchandising strategies.
Vendor and Customer Relations: Interact with vendors/suppliers to determine product selection and negotiate terms of the purchase. Resolve customer concerns.
Data Management or Data Systems Development: Assess and enhance production software support for inventory management.
Fiscal Responsibility: Determine inventory investments; administer the budget, recommend operational policies and procedures. May assist in budget development and provide projects and recommendations.
Leadership/Supervision: May provide functional and/or administrative supervision of staff. Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.
EDUCATION REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Merchandising or Textiles or equivalent combination of education and retail experience.
Work experience (typically 3 years or more) in retail environment including purchasing and inventory control.
Knowledge of procedures and methods for the procurement and management of inventory.
Working knowledge of tools and techniques for maintaining an environment where all understand, and are committed to, providing excellent customer service.
Ability to communicate effectively and establish and build healthy working relationships and partnerships.
Extensive understanding of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail; ability to process information with high levels of accuracy.
Ability to lift up to fifty pounds on an occasional basis.
Proficient with standard MS Office applications.
Work experience (typically 3 or more years) in a collegiate retail or collegiate buying position.
Budget experience and related financial management processes.
Store display and merchandising experience.
